Effect of Penicillin or Tetracycline Injections of Citrus Trees Affected by Greening Disease Under Field Conditions in Reunion Island

چکیده
In a companion paper (BovC et al., 1980) we explained why the prokaryote associated with citrus greening disease is not a mycoplasma, and showed that greening-affected citrus seedlings, which had absorbed penicillin through their roots, developed an abundant root system and produced new, vigorous, symptomless shoots. On the basis of these results, as well as previous ultrastructural studies (Garnier and BovC, 1977) we concluded that the greening organism probably possesses a peptidoglycan-containing cell wall typical of gram negative organisms and is a member of the division Gracilicutes (BovC et al., 1980). In this paper, we add further evidence to this conclusion by showing that, under orchard conditions, penicillin injections into trunks of greening-affected sweet orange trees result in remarkable tree recoveries similar to those achieved with tetracycline injections.

ABSTRACT Citrus Huanglongbing (HLB) is one of the most devastating diseases of citrus worldwide. The causal agent of HLB in Florida is thought to be 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus'. In this work, we examined the responses of 30 different genotypes of citrus to Florida isolates of 'Ca. L. asiaticus' under controlled conditions in the greenhouse or growth room. Although 'Ca. L. asiaticus' was...
متن کاملDetection of Citrus Greening Using Microscopic Imaging
Citrus greening reduces fruit production and quality and will likely result in rapid tree decline and death. Because citrus greening symptoms are usually observed on the leaf surface, detection of citrus greening leaf symptoms can significantly aid in scouting for infected trees and managing the disease, thus reducing its spread and minimizing losses for citrus growers. This article presents th...
متن کاملEffects and side effects of penicillin injection in huanglongbing affected grapefruit trees
Trunk injection with penicillin has been tested to control citrus huanglongbing (HLB), but side effects and environmental safety must be assured before approval of penicillin injection can be considered. We investigated effects of penicillin injection on densities of Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (Las) in leaves, as well as culturable bacterial populations in rhizospheres and petioles of gr...
متن کاملVisible-near infrared spectroscopy based citrus greening detection: Evaluation of spectral feature extraction techniques
Citrus greening is a serious disease affecting citrus production in Florida and different parts of the world. This disease is spread by an insect vector and the trees are killed several years after infection. There is no known treatment for the disease. Disease detection and removal of infected trees is a critical part of citrus greening disease management efforts. This paper reports the evalua...
